Humans, not Cogs

“Out of office” should mean unavailable to do work
I recently wrote a post on my LinkedIn reflecting on the learning from attending DisruptHR here in D.C.
My takeaway boils down to this: **Employees are stressed out.**
Workplaces still treat them like cogs in a machine. Until leaders see their workforce as whole humans, they will keep solving the wrong problems.
Organizations say they want change, yet they continue investing in outdated paradigms:
“We’ll launch a workplace improvement initiative!”
“We’ll be more flexible!”
“We’ll promote self-care!”
“Yay team!” 📣🎊
At best, these efforts grease the gears and take a little strain off the cogs.
What organizations rarely address is how deeply workplace expectations have permeated every aspect of employees’ lives.
For most industries, the calls, texts, emails, and smoke-signal messages really can wait until tomorrow. “Out of office” should mean unavailable to do work.
